Job Title:  Life Skills Aide/Attendant

Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt/Full Time
Pay Grade:  2024-2025 Hourly Pay Scale 

 

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist teacher in preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements.  Attend to the physical needs and personal care of special education students with special needs on campus. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher and assist in group activities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

 

  1. Provide instruction to students under direct supervision of teacher.
  2. Conduct instructional exercises and implement specialized interventions and strategies for Newcomers/ELL students assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.
  3. Attend to students with physical disabilities according to their individualized needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning. 
  4.  Attend to students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene. This may include performing basic medical procedures under the training of a registered nurse such as tube feeding and suctioning a student with a tracheotomy
  5. Assist in classroom management.
  6. Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention, including restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behavior as needed.
  7. Conduct parent involvement activities.
  8. Assist in group activities.
  9.  Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs 
  10. Responsible for supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom including lunchroom, bus duty, and playground.
  11.  Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays as needed.
  12.  Help maintain neat and orderly classroom.
  13.  Help with inventory, care, and instructional resources.
  14. Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  15.  Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers as needed.
  16. Must be team oriented and able to assist in the care and safety of all special needs children on the campus.
  17.  Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  18. Assist in maintaining routine in the absence of the teacher
  19. Maintain a neat and orderly area
  20. Assist in inventory, care and maintanence of equipment.
  21. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  22. Participate in department meetings and special events as assigned.

  24. Perform other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Equipment Used:

Uses wheelchair lift, ramps, Hoyer lift and other equipment as required. Computer with appropriate software, printer, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, overhead projector, DVD/VCR, and other specialized equipment that is particularly unique to the teaching assignment.

  1. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, regular moderate lifting and/or restraint of students and working on the floor.
  2. Move and carry small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.

  4. Occasional moderate lifting up to 50 pounds.

Bob Hope School is a growing open-enrollment public charter school (non-profit) providing parents a choice in their child's education.  Bob Hope Elementary is a Montessori / Dual-Language campus.  Instruction is conducted in a two-way immersion program, where teachers fluent in English teach ELA and those fluent in Spanish teach SLA and are supported by teacher aides with a strong command of both languages.
