JOB TITLE: Maintenance Worker

WAGE / HOUR STATUS: Hourly/Non-exempt/Full Time

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Help maintain the physical school building in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times. Perform general maintenance and repair of building structures and their mechanical and electrical throughout district. 

 

Provide safe, orderly, and efficient transportation of students to and from school and on extracurricular trips.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

    • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
    • Must Possess a Class B (or A) commercial driver’s license with “P” and “S” endorsement and air brake approval (absence of restriction “L”) or willing to obtain during employment. 
    • Successful completion of a twenty (20) hour Texas DPS School Bus Driver Certification Course
    • Attend and successfully complete triennial eight (8) hour refresher courses
    • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures. 

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:

    • Must have current Texas Department of Public Safety School Bus Driver Certification
    • Must be able to pass an annual physical and mental examination as required by Texas Department of Public Safety
    • Must maintain an acceptable driving record for school bus drivers as defined by Texas Department of Public Safety

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

    • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment

    • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions

    • Must be able to pass a pre-employment and periodic drug and alcohol screening as required by federal law

    • Knowledge of basic construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures

    • Ability to operate hand and power tools

    • Ability to work independently

    • Ability to complete and maintain required bus driver safety training
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
    • Ability to proficiently read, write, and communicate verbally in English and understand instructions for safety procedures and cleaning.
    • Knowledge of student discipline procedure
    • Ability to manager student behavior
    • Ability to operate bus and other fleet vehicles
    • Bilingual (preferred)

 

Experience:

Experience as a school bus driver preferred but not required
Three (3) years of experience in maintenance work

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

School Bus Driver:

  1. Report to work in accordance with assigned work schedule
  2. Maintain cooperative relationship with staff members, administrators, school, and community
  3. Adhere Bob Hope School personnel policies and procedures and fleet policy
  4. Perform and document a pre-trip and post-trip inspection on every vehicle driven according to approved Bob Hope School Fleet Policy and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidelines and report all defects in writing to the School Office immediately
  5. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs
  6. Exercise caution and safety while driving; obey all traffic laws and safety guidelines for school buses.
  7. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules as written and communicate changes to appropriate office staff
  8. Ensure student safety while loading and unloading students
  9. Maintain student discipline to ensure the safety of students being transported, address student discipline issues using approved techniques, and communicate with school personnel regarding student behavior on the bus
  10. Report and complete all required documentation for vehicle collisions, vehicle damage, and student injuries
  11. Keep assigned bus cleaned and fueled
  12. Drive bus to pick up and/or drop off students on scheduled routes as needed
  13. Drive bus to and from extracurricular trips as needed
  14. Maintain confidentiality in all matters concerning student transportation for Bob Hope School
  15. Attend training as necessary
  16. Perform other duties as assigned

 

Maintenance:

  1. Perform light maintenance work as assigned.
  2. Assume the responsibility for opening and closing the building each school day.
  3. Clean cafeteria during and after lunch periods.
  4. Maintain all restrooms and keep them clean and fully stocked during operating hours.
  5. Maintain a high standard of cleanness in assigned area.
  6. Maintain a continuous program of care of hard surface floors, mopping, running auto scrubber, applying finish, and burnishing floors.
  7. Maintain clean and orderly closets and storerooms.
  8. Keep the school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas neat and clean.
  9. Observe and inform supervisor of safety hazards.
  10. Move furniture and/or equipment within the building as requested by the school’s administration.
  11. Work around any meetings or special activities that may be in session during work hours.
  12. Required to work in any area of the building assigned. On occasion you will be required to work with a crew to accomplish certain tasks. This usually occurs on student holidays, during student vacation, or when other custodians are out.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Buffer, auto scrubber, wet/dry vacuum cleaner, shampooer and extractor, power washer, and propane burnisher, power tools, and other equipment as needed

ABOUT BOB HOPE SCHOOL
Bob Hope School is a growing open-enrollment public charter school (non-profit) providing parents a choice in their child's education.  Bob Hope Elementary is a Montessori / Dual-Language campus.  Instruction is conducted in a two-way immersion program, where teachers fluent in English teach ELA and those fluent in Spanish teach SLA and are supported by teacher aides with a strong command of both languages. Campuses are located in Port Arthur, Beaumont, and Baytown, Texas.  The Hughen Center, Inc. is the charter holder of Bob Hope School.
